Hard Rock Memorabilia: Strange Transmissions From The World Of The Stones

Posted on September 04, 2009

It’s been an odd week for Stones fans. First, news surfaces that the investigation into the death of Brian Jones is going to be reopened, and then a very pervasive rumor that Charlie Watts has quit the band spread like wildfire. Bizarre.

Ever since Brian Jones was found dead in his pool 40 years ago, whispers of murder have surrounded the case. Though originally pronounced “death by misadventure” by British authorities, there was always a cloud of suspicion over Brian’s live-in handyman, Frank Thorogood. Supposedly, Thorogood made a deathbed confession in ’94, but that is unsubstantiated. Now, British authorities are reopening the case based on new evidence unearthed by London journalist Scott Jones (no relation to the deceased). Once again, suspicion is being cast on Frank Thorogood. It’s not surprising that Brian Jones can still grab headlines 40 years after his death. Stay tuned on this one – there’s sure to be some interesting revelations.

As for Charlie leaving the band, the rumors turned out to be false. Though Mr. Watts has certainly earned a posh retirement, we’re elated that he’s not putting in for his gold watch just yet. Charlie is such a crucial element to the Stones’ sound, it’s hard to imagine they’d be able to continue without him. Here’s our prediction: the Rolling Stones will hang it up in three years. That would be a 50 year career in rock ‘n’ roll – an unmatchable run for any band.

While you’re thinking about the Brian and the Stones, check out this bad boy. It’s Brian’s legendary Vox Mk III guitar. He used it almost constantly in the mid-‘60s.
