11.30: The rebel yelled for the first time today in 1955. Billy Idol took his first steps toward white weddings, Mony, eyes without faces, and rockin' cradles of love. Born William Michael Albert Broad, Idol supposedly gained his nickname during his school days, due to his idle ways. Joining a handful of bands in the '70s as a guitar player, including an early incarnation of Siouxsie and The Banshees and a punk band called Chelsea, Idol moved into the lead singer position with his next band, Generation X. Lasting five years and three proper albums, Generation X tried to remain true to its punk origins, while attempting to pursue more of a rock sound. Tensions boiled over between Idol and other band members due to this dichotomy, however, leading to the departure of the guitar player and the drummer. Pounding it out for one more album, which included an early version of Idol's first solo hit, "Dancing With Myself," Generation X finally called it quits in 1981. Which, of course, allowed Billy to pursue a solo career full of massive rock hits, ubiquitous early '80s videos, and, the cherry on the sundae, a cameo in The Wedding Singer. Man, Billy's got the life.

12.01: The Divine Miss M, Bette Midler, the wind beneath our wings, was born on this day in 1945. Though the kids today (fists shaking in front of our grumpy faces, scowls etched upon our elder brows) may only know Midler for her schmaltzy, monstrous hit song from Beaches or her now-intermittent acting, we know her as a monumentally talented performer, who's been doing it well for many, many years. Midler got her big break at Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse in NYC, in the early '70s. Midler's one of two megastar artists, of whom we can think offhand, to get their start there. Her piano accompaniment came from a young musician and producer by the name of Barry Manilow, who would, as you may or may not know, rule the adult contemporary airwaves for a good portion of the '70s. Miss M moved from the bathhouse scene to the mainstream to the movie screen with ease, releasing her debut album, The Divine Miss M, in 1972 to commercial and critical acclaim, winning a Grammy for Best Newcomer the following year, and earning an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of a talented, yet doomed, singer in The Rose (based loosely on the life of Janis Joplin) in 1979. Divine, indeed. We want to thank Midler's parents for their horizontal mambo nine months prior to her birth and for bringing a great talent into the world, that one song mentioned previously, which we shall not name, notwithstanding.

Greetings from the Common Ground for Africa!

The holiday season is here. Thanksgiving is days away and many are preparing to gather with family and friends to share a meal and give thanks for the blessings that surround us. Shortly after this, we'll head to the malls or browse the internet looking for the perfect gifts to give to our loved ones - gifts that are special and show our love and appreciation for the recipient. For many, this is a favorite time of year. But for some, the holidays can be difficult with complex family dynamics, gift buying that stresses the wallet, and a general distaste for the commercialism that now dominates the season. At the Common Ground for Africa (CGA), we understand and respect the complexities of this season.

Fitz & The Tantrums, one of our favorite new bands anywhere, stopped by Hard Rock Cafe Detroit for an intimate afternoon show hosted by 93.9 The River. We can't say enough about Fitz & The Tantrums, except to say that they put on one of the most amazing, high energy shows you've seen in years (if ever). Their mix of soul, R&B, funk, and rock is not just intoxicating, but is downright addicting. Once you see them, you'll want to see them as much as possible. We just wanted to share a few photos from the HRC Detroit event and this video (just to give you a feel for how amazing they are, even though the video is from a different show).

Big thanks go out to the Fitz & The Tantrums, to 93.9 The River, to the fans who were lucky enough to see such an intimate show, and to HRC Detroit for facilitating the good times. You all rock!

On November 3, 2011, a United States Federal Judge in Springfield, Missouri, entered final judgment for Hard Rock Cafe International (USA), Inc. against Defendant Daniel Bakker in the amount of $500,000 with a Permanent Injunction. In January 2011, Hard Rock Cafe International (USA), Inc. sued Bakker for orchestrating the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit Hard Rock Cafe pins. Hard Rock Cafe's investigation revealed that Bakker was assisted by two Taiwanese citizens. Hard Rock Cafe also pursued the foreign accomplices, who were sentenced to prison in Taiwan for their criminal counterfeiting activities.  As a result of a seizure conducted at multiple locations by the United States Marshal's Office and Hard Rock Café's outside counsel, Baker & McKenzie LLP, thousands of counterfeit Hard Rock Cafe pins were seized before they could be sold to unsuspecting pin collectors.

Gian Bonfanti, Senior Director of Buying at Hard Rock Cafe, stated "Hard Rock Cafe is very pleased with the results of its federal court action against Daniel Bakker. Hard Rock Cafe will continue to monitor and aggressively pursue individuals who are involved in counterfeiting Hard Rock Cafe merchandise or trading off of Hard Rock Cafe's forty-year reputation."

11.21: On this day in 1965, Bjork brought her chillingly original vocal stylings, complete and utter beat-up-a-reporter-at-the-airport-insanity, knack for fowl fashion, and amazing musical talent into the world. From the Sugarcubes to the solo stuff, Bjork exudes originality and musicality, never afraid to try something new or do just what no one expects. She's one of a kind, for sure.

11.22: INXS, the Aussie megagroup, lost its lead singer, Michael Hutchence, on this day in 1997. Found dead his hotel room in Sydney, on the eve of launching the homecoming leg of their world tour, the coroner ruled his death a suicide, but many around him believe otherwise. Found nude with a belt lying nearby, some claim that he died during a botched sex act, as a suicide note never surfaced and he'd previously given no indication of being suicidal. However, alcohol, cocaine, Prozac and other prescription drugs were found in his bloodstream during his autopsy. This, coupled with a bitter custody battle, a history of depression, and an album, Elegantly Wasted, that went nowhere, may have been enough to push him over the edge. We'll never know. We just know that we love "New Sensation" and "Devil Inside" like they were our own children. Viva la 1987!

11.22: On this day in 1978, Karen O was born. Karen who, you ask? Karen O, lead singer and songwriter extraordinaire for one of the best new rock bands of the early 21st century, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Coming on the heels of the garage rock revival of the late 1990s, Yeah Yeah Yeahs took that genre, mixed it up with art rock punk, ala Talking Heads, and threw in a nice dash of '80s alternative rock, the likes of which hadn't been seen since the heyday of U2, R.E.M., and The Pixies. Okay, maybe we go a little to far with that description, but that just goes to show how much we absolutely dig Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Karen O's participation in each and every one of their endeavors. Happy birthday, Ms. O!
