07.25: On this day in 1958, Sonic Youth frontman and lead guitar player Thurston Moore was born. Sonic Youth. One of the most unknown popular bands of all time. They rock. Pure and simple. They friggin' rock. With Moore and Kim Gordon's melding of post-punk with alternative with avant-noise, they brought a sound that continues to ring our ears and rock our world in the best of ways. Though they never achieved the chart success of many of their '80s cohorts, they are still killing stages today, putting out head-turning albums, and generally just being genuine rockers.

07.18: This day in 1953 saw one of the greatest performers of all time record his first songs, which he paid for himself ($3.98, thank you very much), when an 18-year-old Elvis Presley walked through the doors of Sun Records (née Memphis Recording Service) and laid down the tracks for two songs,  "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" and "My Happiness," that were, supposedly, recorded for his beloved mom. Sam Phillips' assistant took note of the young singer, suggesting to her boss that Elvis might be the voice of the new sound Sam was looking to foist upon white teens. That is, rock and roll, an entirely new genre back then, up to that time only performed by African-American musicians and singers. It took a good year from the time Elvis recorded that first vanity record until he quit his job as a truck driver to pursue singing full-time, but that first record began a ride that wouldn't end until his death in 1977. Long live the King!

Florence + The Machine, ascendant and soulful British rock band, graced the intimate stage at Hard Rock Cafe Boston for a very, very lucky group of loyal radio listeners. Who said radio is dead? When you can win tickets to a show like this, with only about 100 people in attendance, we'd listen to the radio 24/7 for a year. Well, that may be a bit of hyperbole, but Florence + The Machine really would be worth it. We just wanted to share a few photos from the show, in case, like most of us, you weren't there. For the ones who were there, just keep it to yourself.

Despite the rain and the cold, the first day of Hard Rock Calling 2011 showed all in attendance the real meaning of rock. That is, that no matter what is going on around you, an incredible music festival will help you forget about everything else, will transport you to a magical land where everything is awesome and there is only music and good times. Yeah, it was that good.
