Actually, we love all kinds of sweets (chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter fudge, Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake Bites), but cupcakes are up high on the list. That's why you should check out Cupcake Wars on the Food Network tomorrow, Dec. 28, at 9:00 P.M. EST.
Why, oh why, would you tempt your sweet tooth with a heaping helping of cake baked into little cups and topped with frosting? Because the winner of tomorrow night's episode got to have their winning cupcake featured at Hard Rock's Pinktober kickoff event this past October at Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood Blvd.
12.29: Don't go chasing waterfalls, y'all. Immortal words spoken by an immortal singer from an immortal band. Now, if we can just remember their name....Hmmm, still don’t have it....Oh, yeah. We just googled it. Tony Toni Tone. No, wait a minute, that’s not right. Okay, we’re done messing around. It’s TLC. That group's most vocal and trouble-prone member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, never backed down from a disturbance she couldn’t cause, which brings us to this day in 1994. Left Eye pled guilty to arson charges in a fire that destroyed her boyfriend’s (Atlanta Falcon’s receiver, Andre Rison) shoes and mansion. You see, they’d had a contentious relationship, fraught with not-so-good times, and Left Eye had had enough. She set fire to his favorite shoes, but the fire got out of hand pretty quickly, burning the massive house down to the ground (we still remember the helicopter-cam images from tv), turning it into a toasted, gnarled shell of nothing, along with all of Rison’s shoes and belongings. Yeah, that’ll teach him! We know we make fun, but we really dig TLC. Their Atlanta-based southern-tinged rhythm and blues holds a special guilty-pleasure place in our rockin’ hearts.

Well, three Hard Rock Cafes are doing something similar, only in our own particular rockin' idiom. That's right, Hard Rock Cafe Memphis, Hard Rock Cafe Nashville, and Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls are all dropping big ol' guitars. There'll also be plenty of great music and libations at each location. Click the logos below to find out more information. 12.21: Frank Zappa, one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, was born on this day in 1940. His influence among musicians is as widespread as the ignorance of his work amongst most other people. From Black Sabbath (the progenitors of heavy metal) to John Frusciante (red hot guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers), from Bill Frisell (modern jazz composer) to George Clinton (latter and modern day funk master), from his son Dweezil to his daughter Moon Unit, Zappa's prodigious influence continues to be explored, 15 years after his death. The month of December saw his birth and his death, bringing his life full circle, or as circular as the life of someone so left field, so known/unknown could be. Happy birthday, Frank. We miss you, sir.

12.13: On this day in 1949, rock got one of its more "beloved" musicians and the NRA got an outspoken member when Ted Nugent was born. Some people love to hate The Nuge, choosing to focus on his political stances, but know he's a rock 'n' roller like no other. Going against the grain is nothing new for Ted, as he's remained steadfastly anti-drug and booze throughout his life (unlike most every other rocker ever), instead putting his energies into, ahem, other pursuits (ie., women, money, guns, and guitars). Probably best known for his '70s arena anthems "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Stranglehold", Ted still rocks out to this day, doing what he does best, prowling the stage like the Motor City Madman he is, was, and shall forever be.
