What, exactly, was Ben Harper celebrating at Hard Rock Cafe Nashville, you ask? His birthday? Nope. His awesome guitar skills? He's got 'em, but nope. Guess again. His upcoming set at Hard Rock Calling in London's Hyde Park? It's gonna rock, but nope. If you guessed that he was raising his voice in song and celebrating the life and times of one Mr. Roy Orbison, then you'd be correct. If you said he was celebrating the 74th birthday of said Mr. Orbison, as well as helping raise money for Musicians On Call, then you'd be even more right.
Barbara Orbison was joined by sons Roy, Alex and Wesley along with family friend Ben Harper, as they prepared to cut cake and celebrate Roy Orbison's 74th Birthday. As a father of four may be prone to do on such occasions, Ben began cutting the cake and wound up cutting and serving it to all the guests! What a guy. The event raised money for Musicians On Call and will create a dedicated Musicians On Call Roy Orbison program at Bordeaux Long Term Care Facility.
The party included soulful performances by guitar player Harold Bradley and singer Mallary Hope; Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Eric Passlay, Rodney Crowell and Chris Rodriguez, Edens Edge, Jeffrey Steele and wrapped with surprise guest Ben Harper singing with Chris Rodriguez on guitar. It was a heartfelt celebration and a wonderful way to honor Roy and the legacy of incredible songs he created.

Hard Rock’s picturesque balcony features seating for 100, overlooking the Ku’damm and Memorial Church. If you're in Berlin or are going to be anytime in the future, you've got to check it out. Yeah, it is awesome.
04.26: On this day in 1982 Rod Stewart was mugged and robbed at gun point in broad daylight on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The object of the gunman’s affection? Stewart’s $50,000 Porsche. 04.27: On this day in 1976 David Bowie was detained at the border between Poland and Russia while customs officials confiscated Nazi memorabilia from his train. Bowie claimed the material was more than just light reading. He was researching a movie project about Nazi propaganda leader, Joseph Paul Goebbels. Hmmm....not sure about that one. We guess it's possible, but the only movie that Bowie made around that time was The Man Who Fell To Earth, which had nothing to do with Nazis or Goebbels or trains and everything to do with alien-Bowie. 04.27: On this day in 1981 Ringo Starr married former Bond girl, Barbara Bach. The pair met while filming Caveman (also starring Shelley Long), quite possibly one of the most underrated films of all time, one of the most visceral and punishing screen portrayals you'll ever watch, and one of the most amazing films by a rock musician ever. If you believe that, we've got a bridge in New York we'd like to sell ya.
04.27: On this day in 1990 Axl Rose married Erin Everly – daughter of Don Everly. Sadly, the love affair didn’t last. Rose filed for divorce after just 27 days. This is great for us, though, because it keeps our faith in the rocker/supermodel unspoken relationship oath of "use 'em and lose 'em" that's held fairly steady for the last fifty years or so. Before that it was crooner/supermodel or crooner/actress unspoken oath, but the tenet of the oath has remained true through the years. Just ask Billy Joel/Christie Brinkley and Rod Stewart/Rachel Hunter. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, but the David Bowie/Imans of the rich and famous world are greatly outnumbered by the Axl Rose/Erin Everleys. And for that we thank them. Without the oath, we'd lose faith in rock. 04.30: On this day in 1933 William Hugh “Willie” Nelson was born. Holy cow, what a guy. We could go on and on and on about Willie, but we shan't. Instead, we'll just say that Willie is one of the most down-to-earth, vibrant, original and amazing guys ever to command a stage. And he smoked a joint on the roof of the White House. Nuff said. If you can name the president who invited him there, without looking it up, you are a true fan. Happy birthday, Willie! We love you, man!

The acclaimed Texan was a pioneer of rock and roll and is one of the very few artists to have been accepted by the world in all forms of popular music. Roy is also one of the exceptional artists to have won Grammys in pop, rock, and country categories. His Hits, including "Ooby Dooby," "Oh Pretty Woman," "Only The Lonely," "Blue Bayou," "Crying," and Handle with Care (as a Traveling Wilbury with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne) is woven into the fabric of our global psyche, forever living in our hearts and our minds and capturing the imagination of new fans daily. Funds raised through the event will create a dedicated "Roy Orbison" program at the Bordeaux Long Term Care Facility. Hard Rock Cafe Dallas, Hard Rock Cafe Houston and Hard Rock Cafe San Antonio will honor their native son with a limited edition giveaway of Roy's trademark dark sunglasses and limited edition sunglass-pins. While the Hard Rock Cafes around the world will be playing Roy's music and videos in all their locations. April 23rd will also see the release of ROY ORBISON: LIVE IN LAS VEGAS ’83. Recorded live in the very city that Elvis crowned him "the greatest singer in the world,” Roy Orbison’s Live in Las Vegas breaks the famous rule that "whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." Live in Las Vegas is comprised of select cuts from live shows (April 14th-21st, Sept 9th-20th 1983) performed in the Congo Room at the world-famous Sahara Hotel. These performances, originally found in poor condition, have been fully restored and digitally re-mastered by the industry's finest audio engineers. Live In Las Vegas is available for digital pre-order in the iTunes Music Store, and the physical CD is available for pre-order at the Official Roy Orbison Store here: http://store.royorbison.com/newroyorbison-liveinlasvegas83.aspx Launching the week of April 23, Gibson Epiphone will initiate a photo campaign of iconic images wearing Roy’s trademark glasses; which will climax on Roy’s birthday with a classic photo of the Big O himself on the Jumbotron in Times Square. In addition, TouchTunes Interactive Networks, the largest interactive in-venue entertainment network in North America, will promote a special 2 week long birthday playlist featuring over 20 hits dedicated to the rock legend. To find out more and how you can participate please visit the official Roy Orbison website, www.royorbison.com, and join the party! As Barbara Orbison would say, “Thank you for loving Roy.”
