Eric Clapton, The Police to Headline Hard Rock Calling – First Tour Stop of Hard Rock’s Worldwide Concert Series
Orlando, Fla., January 28, 2008 – Today, Hard Rock International announced plans for Hard Rock Calling – one of the U.K.’s most-anticipated concert events and the kick-off to Hard Rock’s 2008 Ambassadors of Rock Tour. Rock legends – Eric Clapton, The Police, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, KT Tunstall and Starsailor – will headline Hard Rock Calling in June – the first concert of Hard Rock’s third annual Ambassadors of Rock Tour, a global concert series featuring top artists and bands to benefit charities worldwide.

Returning to Hyde Park after more than a decade since his last headlining performance, the legendary Eric Clapton will headline Saturday, June 28th show and will be joined by special guests Sheryl Crow and John Mayer, with more acts to be announced shortly. Crow and Mayer recently shared a stage with Clapton at the acclaimed Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago.

The Police, following the bands hugely successful world tour will headline on Sunday, June 29th with special guests KT Tunstall and Starsailor, again with more acts to be added to the bill.

“This year’s Hard Rock Calling event in Hyde Park offers an amazing lineup headlined by Eric Clapton, The Police, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, KT Tunstall and Starsailor.   • Eric Clapton's career has endured for more than 40 years, resulting in 18 Grammy® Awards and the distinct honor of being the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Considered one of the world's finest guitarists, Clapton was a member of such seminal rock bands as Cream and Blind Faith, as well as being highly recognized for his solo work, earning him the nickname “Slowhand.”

  • Sheryl Crow has collaborated with everyone from The Rolling Stones to Kid Rock to Willie Nelson throughout her career. She has won countless awards (including nine Grammy Awards) and has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. Crow continues writing new music, and through her strength and perseverance, she continues to be an inspiration to cancer survivors everywhere.

  • John Mayer is an acclaimed American guitarist and singer-songwriter. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, both achieved multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy for "Your Body Is a Wonderland." Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change" at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007.

  • During the band’s time together, The Police had five number one albums, a succession of top 10 singles and earned six Grammy Awards. Last year, the band played its first live performance in the UK since New Year’s Eve 1983, when they performed at Wembley Arena during the Synchronicity Tour. The dates were part of a huge world tour taking in most of the continents of the world, to rapturous applause and the critics delight, ending this year in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

  • KT Tunstall’s debut album Eye To The Telescope was a surefire winner selling almost four million copies, including more than one million in America. She has toured the world and become a festival favorite from Glastonbury to T In The Park (and back again). She secured a Mercury Music Prize nomination, won a Brit Award and has new nominations, as well as the prestigious Ivor Novello Best Song Award, a Q award and a Grammy Nomination. She also outsold every other female artist in the UK in 2005.

  • Starsailor has had three charting albums and ten Top 40 singles in the UK since 2001, won NME awards, played virtually every festival in the world, supported bands like The Rolling Stones and Manic Street Preachers and are now working on their fourth studio album. Starsailor also played Hard Rock’s Ambassadors of Rock Tour stop at Hyde Park in 2006 to critical acclaim.

    In addition to renowned bands and an on-site Hard Rock Cafe, the festival will include a market area, performance art, a healing area and a “chill out” zone.

    Philanthropy will also be an important part of Hard Rock’s global tour, as each Ambassador of Rock event will benefit a local charity.

    Proceeds Benefit African Cotton Farmers and Build Trade in Africa
    Orlando, Fla., January 7, 2008 – U2’s Bono is recognized as one of the world’s greatest performers and activists. Now, through edun LIVE’s partnership with Hard Rock, Bono is combining his love for music with his wife and EDUN co-founder Ali Hewson’s work toward sustained development in Africa. Hard Rock International is proud to launch its latest Signature Series, featuring an edun LIVE t-shirt, adorned with an image by Bono.

    Hard Rock’s Bono Signature Series T-shirt combines EDUN’s Trade for Aid ethos and conscious consumerism with raising funds to benefit African cotton farmers, while creating jobs for African garment workers. Proceeds from the T-shirt sales will benefit Wildlife Conservation Society’s Conservation Cotton Initiative, which helps lift African farmers out of poverty by providing education on proper land management, organic cotton growing techniques and wildlife conservation.

    Since it was established in 1971, Hard Rock has been committed to a wide variety of philanthropic causes and activities around the world. In 1990, Hard Rock International developed the concept of partnering with world-renowned musicians and bands, who create and donate imaginative designs to be reproduced onto T-shirts to benefit the artist’s charity of choice.     In 2007, Edun and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) established the Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI) to work towards improving the livelihoods of communities in Africa by promoting greater investment in sustainable and ethical production of conservation-friendly agricultural products. Another focus of CCI is to incorporate sustainable conservation agricultural practices and the protection of wildlife. CCI focuses in particular on cotton grown organically or through methods that are part of a transition from conventional to organic production. The WCS currently works on sustainable conservation farming with farmers in Madagascar, Uganda and Zambia. WCS advises and works with Edun in those countries to help farmers apply sustainable conservation methods in growing cotton.
